The year is 2003. Madonna is promoting a new album, Britney Spears is still the next Madonna at the top of her game and Christina Aguilera is going through her “skanky ho” phase. They come up with the idea to do something truly shocking for the MTV Video Awards.

They decide to do a version of Madonna’s “Like A Virgin”, which would morph into her new song Hollywood. First Britney comes out, veiled in a white wedding dress, singing “Like a virgin…”, down a flight of white stairs. You can tell that she is not lip syncing, because it’s not perfect, but some might be surprised to learn that she can really sing. That is until Christina Aguilera enters the same way. Christina also starts singing before flipping back her veil, but the crowd roars recognizing her voice right away. Even a few notes are enough to blow Britney right out of the water (it’s even worse with Madonna - in general and especially that night). The two women square off and head to the opposite sides of the stage. This is when the legend, Madonna, enters in a tuxedo and a stovepipe hat. It’s not sure what’s going on, but by as much as Christina was above and beyond of what one would expect of a pop diva, Madonna was that much below it. The notes were all over the place. She even looked embarrassed, it seemed. Maybe, she was nervous about what was about to go down. Perhaps not. Madonna is not a stranger to controversy, nor to being a mediocre singer, so it’s probably the latter. But no one will remember that, and it’s because of what happens next. The divas dance around a little bit, act out Madonna being the groom and Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera being the brides. In the meantime, the very smart and sneaky director of the live show strategically places a camera on Justin Timberlake (his breakup with Britney is still pretty fresh). He knows that it’s unusual just to single him out like that, but he is nonetheless clueless. Then finally Madonna, Britney and Christina pause for a second, Madonna leans over to Britney standing on her right and they kiss each other with tongues and everything. The crowd goes wild, as, I am sure, everybody watching at home. So much so that they miss that Christina gets the same treatment, partly because they switch to the camera on Justin Timberlake who appears thoroughly stunned. He he. Cudos to the director. It’s not that the kiss was a waste on Christina, because I could watch her make out with anything just about all day, but at that point she had been trying to be a slut for so long and so hard that there was no shock value there.

Of course, the whole thing was all over the news. Some were crazy about it, while others, outraged.

Madonna is still doing all right, but she has been having trouble scoring a major hit lately, but her shows are still sold out. Christina is still very active on the pop scene; and she is doing very well, thank you for asking. Britney Spears, on the other hand, is constantly in the tabloids, but not because of what happened at the MTV Music Video Awards, but rather due to her screwed-up marriage to Kevin Featherline with whom she had two kids like two months apart. She acts erratic, she is out of shape and people are wondering if her carrier took a permanent blow.
