The space shuttles will be flying a series of missions until the end of 2010 to complete the International Space Station. After that the aging NASA fleet of space shuttles may be decommissioned completely. They will be replaced by cheaper, but arguably lamer rockets, pretty much the same technology that put Sputnik into orbit. How’s that supposed to be a step forward, I don’t know.

As it turns out, other countries are looking to explore space as well. China has announced planes to land on the Moon. I have always been fascinated by countries’ desire to invest gobs of money into projects that have very little tangible benefit. They are basically a very expensive way of saying: “Hey I’m here too, and don’t you mess with me.”

The American Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a carnivorous bird found in North America. It is most recognizable as the national bird and one of the most important symbols of the United States. This Sea Eagle has two subspecies that we are aware of and forms a species pair with the White-tailed Eagle. Its range and habitat includes a great part of Canada, completely covers the continental U.S., and northern Mexico. It can be mostly found near large bodies of open water that have an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting purposes.

The Bald Eagle is a very large bird, with a body length of 26 to 41 inches (68–100 cm). Females are about one quarter larger than males. Adult females can weigh in excess of 12.8 pounds (5.8 kg), males weigh approximately 9 lb (4.1 kg). in addition, females have an approximate wingspan of about 7 feet or so on average (2.1 m), while adult males have a wingspan of 6.5 ft (2 m). The adult Bald Eagle has a dark brown body with the head and tail being white in color, and bright yellow irises, taloned feet, and a hooked beak. Males and females have no major differences in their in plumage coloration like some other spices of birds.

The Bald Eagle’s diet is mainly fish, but it is not a picky feeder otherwise. It will also willing to feed on carrion, smaller mammals, and other birds. It hunts down fish by swooping down and snatching up the fish out of the water with its talons in mid flight. It is a very powerful flier. The Bald Eagle can fly at about 30 miles per hour (48 kph) while carrying fish and it’s speed is about 35–44 miles per hour (56-70 kph) when gliding. The Bald Eagle is sexually mature between four or five years of age, and often returns to its birthplace to find a mate and breed. Bald Eagles will build a nests up to 8feet across out of branches, and lay one and three eggs per year.

The Bald Eagle usually chooses a mate for life. If one of the pair dies or disappears, the other one will choose another mate. The union is also broken up, if it fails to produce offsprings.

The species was on the brink of extinction in the continental United States (i.e., while flourishing in much of Alaska and Canada) late in the 20th century, but now has a stable population and has been officially removed from the list of endangered species. The Bald Eagle was reclassified from “Endangered” to “Threatened” on July 12, 1995 by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. In 1999, a proposal was initiated “To Remove the Bald Eagle in the Lower 48 States From the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife.” It was delisted on June 28, 2007.

I was surprised to learn that people are doing a lot of searches for the term “losing virginity”, and “guide to losing virginity” on the Internet. Over three thousand searches on Yahoo! alone to be exact. College, you might think, could have been the perfect place for losing one’s virginity, but I got scared off by how fast people rushed into relationships. I was too afraid of getting hurt, I guess. To make the long story short, I lost my virginity at the age of 23, because she wouldn’t take no for an answer. And to tell you the truth, it sucked. It was rushed, and I wasn’t really into her anyway. So, I basically waited all that time for nothing.

If I were you, I would want to get really close with that person and make sure that you both want the same thing out of the relationship. If you are taking too long for them then probably they are not the right person for you. Don’t let yourself be pressured into anything you don’t want to do.
  4. And finally, the most important thing of all in my short guide to losing your virginity is that you DON’T WANT ANYBODY TO GET PREGNANT. Use protection!

The brown recluse spider is a highly venomous spider. There have been cases where the victim of a brown recluse spider bite lost a limb due to the extensive tissue damage. This spider not as famous as the black widow, but in some ways it is more dangerous since there is not a special mark by which it can be easily identified. As a matter of fact it looks like an ordinary and harmless house spider. This is why it’s important that we learn as much as we can about what it looks like so we can identify it, and learn it’s favorite hiding places so we can take proper preventive measures.

As a general rule of thumb, they like dark places such as a shed, garage or attic but you can find them in a pile of firewood or debris and even in the bushes. If you left your shoes outside for some reason, make sure that shake it out really well to make sure that nothing found its way into it overnight. If you are going up into the attic, turn on the light thirty minutes in advance. That usually forces them into the darker corner leaving you with a lower level of risk, but still look around very carefully.

All this is there to inform and not to scare or induce a anti-spider rampage. The author is not a big fan of spiders himself. As a matter of fact, he has had arachnophobia since childhood, which he is constantly working on and hoping to overcome completely some day. The truth is that most spiders are completely harmless to humans. On top of that, they have their place in the ecosystem and serve a purpose. Having lived in the South West for quite a few years, the author can say with confidence that encounters with potentially life-threatening creatures can be kept at a virtual zero if one just educates himself and lives mindfully and with his eyes open.

Milking a Spider

How about milking a brown recluse spider? Sounds crazy doesn’t it? But some scientists think that there is a benefit to syphoning off the venom of brown recluse spider and studying it. If you have seen pictures of a person’s body where it got bitten by a brown recluse spider (watch a slide show of the progression of a persons hand effected by a brown recluse bite), you know that it is arguably the ugliest most repulsive and disturbing sight you will come across. As a matter of fact, the very flesh starts decomposing and oozing away to the point that a limb, for example, may have to be amputated to save the victim.

So, scientists are naturally interested in studying the venom of this highly dangerous spider and it’s relatives in hope of finding an antidote. They travel around the world gathering these creatures then they extract the venom and analyze it.

To get the venom out of the brown recluse spider, one needs to sedate it. They use carbon dioxide to this end. This temporarily causes the spider to lose consciousness. After this, the spider is turned upside down and the fangs are cleaned with and air tool from all sand and dirt to prevent contamination of the venom. The next step is to put a low-current charge through the body of the brown recluse spider to cause the venom containers to contract and expel their content. The venom is collected by a suction device into a tube. However, another suction device must also be used since the same electrical charge will contract the entire body of the brown recluse spider, which essentially means that the animal will throw up. This is also to prevent contamination of the venom.

While this procedure may seem very intrusive, it was designed with the brown recluse spider’s health and well-being in mind. In the end, the animal emerges unharmed. Probably, though, with a very large headache (if spiders get headaches) and wondering where his lunch went from it’s belly. Well, that seems like a small price to pay, if humankind emerges from this with weapons to combat a very painful and potentially detrimental ailment.
