Early Life
Born in Gary, Indiana to the couple Joseph and Katherine Jackson, Janet Jackson is the youngest of the nine children the couple had. Janet Jackson’s family was a lower-middle class family. Janet Jackson’s older brothers’ Jackie, Marlon, Tito, Michael and Jermaine started performing on stage at nightclubs and famous by the name Jackson 5. They started performing on stage shows when Janet Jackson was a toddler.
Motown Records spotted the Jackson 5’s and they signed a contract with the company and they released their first singles album in the year 1969. The album turned out to be a great success. This amazing success of the Jackson 5’s helped the family re-locate to Encino, CA, Southern California in the year 1971. The family settled in a gated mansion. The mansion in which they lived was referred as “Hayvenhurst.”
The year 1994 saw Janet Jackson’s debut performance at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas. She performed alongside her eight elder siblings. Janet Jackson’s outstanding performance in her first show won over crowds and critics.
CBS president Fred Silverman spotted the Jackson siblings at their Las Vegas show. The CBS was desperately looking out for a new variety act to replace their defunct show The Sonny and Cher Show. On the 16th of June, 1976, the Jacksons’ debut in the TV took place. Their show became the first ever television show being starred by an African-American family. The show lasted for almost two seasons continuously. Television sitcoms like A New Kind of Family, Different strokes and Good Times featured Janet Jackson. She also appeared in the primetime drama Fame.
Recording Career
In order to obey her father’s orders, she participated in a number of family music project, despite of her disinterest of becoming a professional singer. The song titled ‘Love Song for Kids’ was her first debut recording. It was a duet with her brother Randy and was recorded in the year 1978. Janet Jackson’s recording career started when her father arranged a contract with A&M Records when Janet Jackson was 15 years old. Her debut album was released in the year 1982. It was a self-titled album by name Janet Jackson. After this Janet Jackson continued progressing in her career as a singer and her second album was released in the year 1984. The name of the album was Dream Street. She continued releasing albums one after the other and almost all of them were successful. In the year 1991, Janet Jackson signed a 40 million dollars contract with Virgin Records. It was considered to be largest recoding deal of that time. Her fifth album Janet was released after this.
Janet Jackson also featured in some films like Nutty Professor II etc. Janet Jackson has been ranked the second most successful artist of the decade by the Billboard.
