HP Laptop Review: The HP Pavilion DV6000

HP laptop computers have entered a new era in the first half of 2007. There is a new design for HP laptops that actually make the machines very pleasing to the eye. Fortunately, they have remained one of the more affordable brands out there.

I was in the market for a new laptop computer earlier this year (2007, to be exact). I figured I would probably get around $300 for my Fujitsu Lifebook C Series computer on eBay. So, I decided that I could probably afford another $1,000 on to of the $300 to invest into my new machine. I looked at some Fujitsus, because I was very satisfied with their product, but I decided against buying one in the final analysis. The reason being that I wanted a beefier machine this time around. I wanted 2 gigabytes of RAM in my new lap top, because I was going to edit some videos, and also a decent graphics card for the same reason. In addition, built-in web cams started to become all the rage, so I wanted one too. Built-in WiFi was a must, and so was the built-in blue tooth. Furthermore, I wanted the ability to not only write CDs but DVDs as well.

I have never seriously considered buying an HP laptop before, because they were not only cheap, which is normally a good thing, but also cheap looking. Some one right must have gotten promoted a while ago, because they pulled all stops in the design department. My machine is all black on the outside, with some really cool graphics. When you walk into the laptop computer department in a store that carries other brands as well, they really catch the eye. They look really good indeed.

They also started putting some really cool hardware in them, while keeping the new line of HP laptops affordable. I paid about $1,300 for the following:

HP Pavilion 6000DV Laptop Computer

Intel Core Duo 1.85Ghz Processors

15.4 Inch Screen

120GB Hard Drive

2GB RAM

CD/DVD RW

Built-IN WiFI

Built-In Bluetooth

Built-In 1.3 Megapixel Web Cam

Built-In Dual Microphones

NVidia GForce 7400 Graphics Card with 128MB RAM

Windows Vista Home Edition

Now, that is a lot of bang for your buck. Oh, I forgot to mention that also includes shipping and handling, because I directly bought it off their website.

The only thing that I was not that happy about when it came to the hardware configuration options while I was piecing my HP laptop together was that with the smaller 15.4 inch screen they did not offer the more powerful NVidia GForce 7600. I have no use for the wider screen, it makes the laptop computer too bulky an heavy. It is too bad, because I could have used the dedicated 256MB graphics card.

On the downside, the keyboard is a considerable lower quality one compared to my higher end Fujitsu, and the plastic covering the machine creaks. There are only three USB ports, and the headset plugs in from the front, which is great if you are listening to music through a head set, but a pain in the butt if you want to plug in your speakers.

Lastly, let us talk about the operating system of choice for these machines: Windows Vista. I thought that it would have been a waste of hardware to get Widows XP for my dual core laptop computer. To make use of the two logical CPUs, you got to have Vista. The features are great, they really are. But the truth is that Vista is really full of bugs, and they should have not released it before it was ready. Just to give you a couple of examples, I never had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall the operating system while I had Windows XP on my machine. Windows Vista permanently crashed on the second day a had my HP laptop. Internet Explorer 7 has some kind of a conflict with the current version of Flash that causes it to shut down a lot. This is just to mention a few. It is a major pain in the butt.

Overall, I am very happy with my HP Pavilion 6000DV laptop computer, I would recommend it to anyone.

My friend opted for a Dell before I bought my HP. He is very happy with it. Still, you will get more hardware for the same amount of money if you go with an HP machine. Hope that helps. Thanks for the comment.
